At a time when short-term rental bookings are on the rise, Airbnb has decided to launch 100+ new in-app features throughout 2021 to improve the experience for both hosts and guests. These improvements will help the giant of holiday renting attract more short term rentals and travellers to its platform leveraging the momentum of the coronavirus recovery. We’ve summarised everything that guests and hosts need to know about the updates.

Inspiration for the New Airbnb features

Airbnb has based these improvements on the Report on Travel and Living released in May 2021. This new travel report shows some new insights besides the ones we have been foreseen in the last month’s trends: 

  • Travellers are increasingly travelling at any time. Seasonality in the reservations is decreasing. This factor is affected by the possibility of working remotely and by the fact that tourists are more flexible and able to book at off-peak times and save some money too. 
  • Guests are interested in certain types of accommodations such as cabins, tree-houses, yurts, boats, etc. 
  • The trend shows that longer-term rentals are starting to get more popular in Airbnb.
  • Travel for family reasons is overtaking travel for business reasons.  

With these points in mind, Airbnb has decided to meet the needs of its users and offer a more flexible search for travellers, a simpler experience for owners or hosts and better customer support.

Airbnb new features: “I’m flexible”

Based on the information from the latest reports, the Airbnb channel has realised that guests need more flexibility when researching their destinations and accommodation. 

That is why Airbnb has introduced three key new features that will allow guests to find exactly what they are looking for:


  • Flexible locations: Guests can choose the exact type of accommodation they want to rent according to the area. For example, if they know that they would like to travel to a treehouse but they are open to going to different places, now Airbnb will show them the matching destinations in a broader range. 
  • Flexible matching: showing options that are slightly outside of the guest’s search filters, in order to provide more vacation rental options.
  • Flexible dates: Airbnb has included the possibility to add more dates options, from a long term rent to a weekend getaway.

    • Curated wishlists. A feature that is included in many apps is the option to “save” the results that you are most interested in into a list to review later. Airbnb was not going to be left behind with this feature and has introduced it with the name of “Wishlist”.
    • Faster processes. If you are a new guest, the check out process is simpler, quicker and more efficient. 
    • Other improvements. On the guest experience level, Airbnb has introduced other updates like providing all the arrival information for the guest in the same place. Or giving more details about the property amenities so they can have a better picture of what they will find.

    What is clear is that Airbnb has seized a key moment in which, thanks to the coronavirus, vacation rentals are beginning to be the preferred option for many travellers instead of hotels. Additionally, it is using its momentum to attract new hosts in order to meet the demand of all new post-coronavirus guests.

    Airbnb improvements on the Host experience: 

    What Airbnb is aiming for with its more than 100 in-app updates is to expand its market, but for this, it is looking for more owners willing to rent its properties and thus be able to offer more accommodation options. How is it going to achieve this? The rental giant has made the process of becoming an Airbnb host a much simpler experience:

    • All new host welcome page. The design of this introductory page is completely new, user friendly and optimized to the maximum. 
    • Easier to list a house. Airbnb is considering that not all the owners are holiday rental professionals, and due to this, it has simplified the process to list a property in the application. Now everyone can advertise their home in 10 simple steps.  
    • Help tab. If the host is not completely sure about how to create the listing, they can request a one to one session with a SuperHost to ask for advice. Yes, hosts are able to become SuperHosts and earn a badge in their profile. Although this will not be ready worldwide until December 15th. 
    • Auto-filled details.  Take publicly available real estate data to shorten the process of filling up the information.
    • Today tab. This page of the app will show hosts their tasks of the day.

    Amongst these improvements there are many more like updates in Airbnb’s inbox. Although It is important to know that not all the Airbnb’s new features are ready yet. Airbnb will be implementing them throughout the year. First, they will be ready in the United States and then they will be expanding to other countries.

    • Support from 11 to 42 languages. Airbnb has levelled up to a worldwide service by tripling the number of languages supported. Some of the new additions include Greek, Hebrew, Serbian, Catalan, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian. 
    • Doubled the support agents. To satisfy the needs of all the new hosts and guests, Airbnb is getting ready for the questions and demands of their clients. 
    • More authority to resolve issues. Thanks to the SuperHost program, the profiles with the badge will be considered professionals, therefore, their input when helping other accounts will be considered more authoritative.
