A hospitality career brought to Puerto Rico

Most short-term rental hosts learn hospitality through hosting. Sue A. Riley brought it with her — a whole career of it. When she and her husband retired to Puerto Rico — where they had married in 2001 and bought their home in 2008 — opening a short-term rental wasn't a side project. It was the next chapter of a career.

Beach Vibes Condo

"Once I started with Your.Rentals, it kicked it into gear. I am getting more and more bookings from all platforms."

The condo above their own

For years, Sue and her husband had quietly eyed the unit directly above theirs. When it came up for sale in 2023, they bought it — a blank canvas they could remodel, furnish, and shape to fit their neighborhood and their guests.

The design philosophy was simple, and characteristic of someone who’s spent a working life in hospitality: furnish the rental the way you’d want your own home to be furnished. Sue duplicated what she had in her own unit, with one addition — a beach vibe that matched the location. The result is a property guests consistently describe as having everything they need.

The market: snowbirds, locals, and hurricanes

Sue’s neighborhood is a strong vacation destination — a beach that’s effectively private to the local community, very quiet, and increasingly saturated with short-term rentals. The guest mix moves with the seasons: snowbirds in winter, locals in summer, and a real soft spot from September through October when hurricane risk thins demand.

Saturation was where the operational pressure showed up. Beach Vibes Condo was already listed on Airbnb and VRBO and pulling rentals — until it wasn’t. The volume of competing inventory in the same neighborhood meant Sue’s listing was, in her words, “almost like I wasn’t even showing up on those platforms.”

Where Your.Rentals fits in

That changed when Sue signed up with Your.Rentals:

“Once I started with Your.Rentals, it’s like it kicked it into gear. I am getting more and more bookings from all platforms.”

The shift wasn’t just in volume. Your.Rentals first helped Sue fill the awkward short gaps other channels left open — the one-night and quick-turn stays most listings ignore. Over time, those short fill-ins gave way to something more valuable:

“Your.Rentals helped fill in some gaps where I only had a few nights available at first, but now I am getting more and more multi-night stays.”

The other result is a reach Sue didn’t have before. The new visibility brought guests from around the world — something she names as the biggest reward of all:

“The greatest thing we have enjoyed the most is meeting all sorts of people from all over the world. Your.Rentals has expanded our visibility on the web which has been great.”

The reviews are landing where Sue would want them. Booking.com guests have given Beach Vibes Condo an average rating of 4.75 out of 5 — early but strong validation that the hospitality detail Sue has put into the property is registering:

“Great location and a very responsive host! The place had absolutely everything we needed to get started, including thoughtful extras like coffee, snacks, and a few bottles of water.” — Booking.com guest, May 2026

Sue’s playbook for new hosts

Asked what advice she’d give to someone starting out, Sue offers the discipline of a hospitality lifer — practical and rooted in the guest’s experience:

“Think of what you would want if you were a guest in a rental. Go stay at some other rentals and see what they have to offer, and get ideas. Make sure to have a guest directory of great places in your area to visit. Also have a house manual with all the instructions on how to operate things like the washer and dryer, TV, A/C. Don’t be too restrictive with your bookings. Allow one-night stays if that works for you, and quick turns.”

That last line is the one most directly tied to her Your.Rentals turnaround. Flexibility is what let her capture the short stays that filled her calendar — and built the booking momentum that’s now translating into multi-night reservations.

For Sue, Beach Vibes Condo isn’t a retirement project. It’s the same hospitality work she’s always done, in a new venue, with the right distribution platform underneath it.
